What does this tool do?
This free color picker gives you any color's HEX, RGB, and HSL codes instantly — pick visually, type a code, or use your browser's native eyedropper to sample from the screen. It also generates shades, tints, and a complementary palette, with one-click copy for every value.
How does the color picker work?
Color conversions use exact formulas between the RGB and HSL models (HEX is just RGB in hexadecimal). Shades multiply lightness down toward black; tints scale it toward white. The eyedropper uses the EyeDropper API (Chrome/Edge) to sample any pixel on your screen.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between HEX, RGB and HSL?
They describe the same colors differently. HEX (#06B6D4) is compact RGB in hexadecimal — the CSS standard. RGB (6, 182, 212) gives the red/green/blue components. HSL (187°, 94%, 43%) is the most human-friendly: rotate hue for a different color, adjust lightness for shades — ideal for building palettes.
How do I check if two colors have enough contrast for accessibility?
WCAG requires a contrast ratio of at least 4.5:1 for normal text and 3:1 for large text (18pt+). The ratio compares relative luminance of foreground and background. This picker shows the contrast ratio of your color against black and white so you can pick readable text colors instantly.
Is the color picker really free?
Yes — 100% free with no hidden charges, trial limits, or premium tiers for core features. No account or email needed. The site is supported by non-intrusive display ads, which keeps every tool free for everyone.
Are my files private when using the color picker?
Completely. The color picker processes everything locally in your browser — your files are never uploaded to any server. When you close the tab, everything is gone. This makes it safe for confidential documents, client work, and personal photos.
Does the color picker work on mobile phones?
Yes. It's built mobile-first and works on any modern phone browser — iPhone (Safari) and Android (Chrome) included. You can pick files straight from your camera roll and download results directly to your device.
Do I need to install any software to use the color picker?
No. The color picker runs entirely in your web browser — no downloads, extensions, or signup. Open the page, use the tool, download your result. It works on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iOS, and Android.
